However, with a little bit of forward planning, and some sensible water-saving measures, there’s really no need to fore-go this guilty pleasure. As winter approaches, the following tips might help to provide you and your family with the showers they deserve. Getting started A standard shower-head dispenses more than two gallons of water (about 10 litres) per minute. Typically, the first gallon or more goes straight down the drain while the user waits for the water to reach a desirable temperature. By insulating pipes, the water will get hot quicker, reducing both energy and water wastage. It’s also a good idea to block the drain with something that can catch the early spray, such as a bucket. The saved water can later be used to soak clothes, wash cars and pets, or water the garden. Finally, make sure that the shower is turned off correctly: a dripping shower-head can waste hundreds of gallons each year. A quick internet search displays hundreds of makes and models, and the keen competition means that consumers are the winners.
